| Index No. A4403 | EARLY 18TH CENTURY FRENCH MOCK PENDULUM VERGE |
An early French calendar verge with silver champleve dial and mock pendulum in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with pierced and engraved pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Bridge cock with a semi-circular aperture to reveal the mock pendulum bob on one arm of the balance and the index below. The chased and engraved table depicting Andromeda and Perseus. Signed silver champleve dial, an aperture below the centre for the date calendar. Arcaded minute ring, Roman and Arabic numerals, pierced gilt hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark "M" in a rectangle below a crown.
This watch seems to be influenced by Dutch work of the period. The maker is probably Nicolas Fardoil who designed a number of wheel and fusee cutting engines.
