Index No. A4301 MID 17th CENTURY FRENCH VERGE

A mid 17th Century pre balance spring verge in a cast engraved case. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with slender baluster pillars. Fusee and gut with blue steel barrel setup on the plate, decorative blue steel spring, later ratchet. Pierced and engraved cock with elongated pierced and engraved foot secured by a screw. Plain steel two arm balance without hairspring, three wheel train. Silver dial with Roman numerals, the centre finely engraved with foliate decoration. Single gilt hand in the form of a sword. Fine cast silver case, chased and engraved in twelve panels, hinged silver lid, later silver ring pendant and bow.

In exceptionally fine condition for a watch of this period. The case shows little sign of wear, the engraving still crisp. In common with almost all watches of this period a few parts have been replaced: No attempt has been made to disguise them. Theodore Girard was born late in the sixteenth century, the son of a watchmaker of German origin. Working in the watchmaking centre of Blois he lived for a remarkable 84 years, dying in 1680.
