Index No. A4201 17th CENTURY ROCK CRYSTAL VERGE

A late 17th Century English verge with gold champleve dial in a rock crystal case. Full plate fire gilt movement with three pierced tulip pillars and a single turned baluster blue steel pillar. Early four wheel train with small second wheel. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved cock with later diamond endstone, pierced and engraved foot. Later plain polished steel balance, silver regulator disc. Fine gold champleve dial marked only for the hours with Roman numerals, later single blue steel hand. Fine rock crystal case with scalloped edge, rock crystal glass. Scalloped gilt frames engraved both at the edge and on the portions that shut. Purpose made 18th Century outer protective case of gilt metal covered in shagreen, gilt pique pins.

Solomon Bouquet, 1680. Clockmakers Company 1683 - 1700. Watch in the British Museum. A very early example of a watch with balance spring made in the style of pre-balance spring examples and without minute hand. The few mechanical changes made to it have left little impression on the fabric of the watch. They were probably carried out when the outer case was made as a replacement for the simple leather box which would have protected the watch up until that time.
