Index No. A4231 GOLD ENAMEL FORM WATCH

A fine late 18th Century Swiss verge gold and enamel pearl set watch in the form of a stag beetle. Small full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with star shaped steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Round pillars. Signed white enamel dial with and Arabic numerals, gold hands. Finely detailed gold and enamel case in the form of a stag beetle. The legs and pincers set with split pearls, the gold work between the black enamel panels decoratively engraved, red stone set eyes. The hinged wings spring open by pressing the rear set of legs together revealing the watch dial. By moving the front set of legs toward the head the pincers open, probably so that the watch can be hung on a chain.

A very early example of this type of form watch in fine overall condition. The sprung pincers are a rare feature which still functions well.
