Index No. A4147 RARE STONE SET GOLD ENAMEL SWISS REPEATER

An 18th Century Swiss quarter repeating verge in a very rare diamonte set gold and enamel pair case. Full plate fire gilt movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc. Plain three arm gilt balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the case. White enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, diamonte set pierced silver hands. Decoratively pierced plain gold inner case, gold push pendant with diamonte set silver top and bow. Very fine and rare outer case of unusual design. The gold case pierced overall with a geometric patten of squares to form an open work lattice. The rectangular sides of the squares decorated in translucent blue enamel, the small squares remaining engraved with small four leaf clover motifs. The pierced holes are occupied by individual silver sections retained by wires. Each of these sections is set with four small diamontes. Diamonte set silver bezel.

The technique used to decorate the outer case is very unusual, if not unique. It would have been very difficult to make and the work has been executed superbly. The design naturally leaves small apertures and the case does not need any further piercing to allow the sound of the bell to be heard. The visual effect created is striking and very attractive. It is possble that of the two names on the movement one is responsible for the case..
