Index No. A4226 GOLD FREESTANDING REPOUSSE PAIR CASED VERGE

An 18th Century English verge in a fine gold freestanding repousse pair case. Full plate fire gilt movement with unusual pierced and engraved pillars. Pierced and engraved bridge cock, large pierced and engraved plate bearing the signature and blued regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Fully restored white enamel dial with arcaded minute ring, Roman and Arabic numerals, pierced gilt hands. Gold (probably 22 carat) pair cases, decorative gold pendant and bow, maker's mark "IW". The outer case of finely chased and engraved freestanding repousse work pierced to reveal an engine turned gold plate of red translucent enamel. The detailed scene depicting five figures and a camel within a rococo frame.

An unusual and effective use of an enamel backing freestanding repousse work which more commonly has another layer of plain or worked gold. The condition of the case is outstanding, showing almost no sign of wear.
