Index No. A4021 AUSTRIAN CRUCIFIX FORM WATCH

An unusual Austrian verge in a crucifix form case. Shaped full plate movement with square baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, Fusee and gut with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Small plain two arm steel balance without hairspring. Champleve enamel and gilt dial, an oval cartouche depicting Adam and Eve. Small engraved silver chapter with Roman numerals, single blue steel hand. Unusual complex multi hinged silver and enamel case. All faces glazed and hinged to the main frame attached to the movement which can be exposed rather like opening the petals of a flower. Cast pendant and ring bow, turned finial.

A most unusual piece. It is not clear whether it was intended to deceive when made in the late 18th Century or if it were made as a piece of jewellery. Without a hairspring its timekeeping would not have been useful!
