Index No. A4023 RARE ENGLISH GOLD ENAMEL FORM WATCH

A rare late 18th Century English cylinder with visible balance in a gold and enamel form case. Pear shaped full plate fire gilt keywind fusee movement. The balance visible above the dial has four spiral arms and set with diamonds. Polished steel bridge cock with diamond endstone, polished steel cylinder, large brass escape wheel. Circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, fine pierced gold hands. Unusual gold and fully restored enamel case in the form of a pear, the back set with a row of small split pearls. The front of the case has two glazed lids hinging at the waist allowing access to the dial to set the hands and to the balance to regulate the watch. The enamel is predominately dark blue with fine gilt decoration, a border of white enamel running around the band. On the back a polychrome enamel scene of a couple in a garden, doves nesting in the tree above. There are two symmetrically placed small gold circles, one of which is the winding aperture, the other serving only as a visual balance to it. When the key is placed on the square the gold sleeve retracts allowing the watch to be wound. Gold and enamel oval pendant and bow.
