Index No. A7339 Swiss Deck Chronometer
A mid 19th Century Swiss pivoted detent chronometer fitted in a brass marine chronometer bowl and mahogany deck box.  Keywind gilt bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Pivoted detent chronometer escapement, escape and detent pivots with endstones in gold settings. Signed silvered dial with subsidiary seconds, Arabic numerals, blue steel hands.  The watch movement (diameter 42 mm) fitted into a larger brass bowl with fittings for gimbals and a rotating shutter to the winding hole.  This fits in a circular aperture in the later purpose made mahogany deck box.
SignedJ Calme Robert - 335
Circa 1860
Diameter [bezel] 90 mm
An unusual piece, probably pressed into service as a marine chronometer during the second world war when there were not enough accurate movements to meet the demand.  The movement may well have come from a gold watch commandeered by the government from some hapless owner.
