Index No. A4813 Gold Hunter with Up/Down Dial
A 19th Century English lever with power reserve indication in a gold full hunter case. Gilt half plate keywind movement with fusee and chain. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, heavy compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. English table roller lever escapement. Screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones. White enamel dial with subsidiaries for seconds and power reserve, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain 18 carat full hunter case, two fly-springs to the front cover. On the back and engraved monogrammed shield surrounded by thistles bearing the motto "Auld Lang Syne - Memo Me Impune Laces Sit". On the front cover the dedication "Frae My Bairns - Jany 1st 1881". Wound and set through the gold cuvette, maker's mark "JW" in a rectangle.

In fine overall condition. The engraving on the covers is interesting: Given to a father by his children on New Years 1881 (Frae My Bairns - From my Children). The back cover bears thistles, the Scottish emblem and engraved "Auld Lang Syne", a traditional Scottish song which is sung throughout the English-speaking world to usher in the new year on Hogmanay.
