Index No. A4707 RARE 19th CENTURY AMERICAN SILVER PAIR CASED VERGE

A rare 19th Century American verge with unusual regulator in silver pair cases containing a watch paper by the maker. Full plate fire gilt movement with fusee and chain. Pierced and engraved masked cock, unusual regulator, the index on the top plate adjusted by a square with wide blue steel border. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, gold hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark "V*R" in an oval. Watch paper bearing the name of the maker and another also from Springfield Mass.

It is unusual to find watches signed by American makers before the middle of the 19th Century. The survival of the watch papers makes it more interesting. It is probable that the watch was ordered by Seth Flagg or partly manufactured in England and only finished in Massachusetts. An early example of a watch from Springfield which later became a major centre for manufacturing in the United States.
