Index No. A4725 SILVER REPOUSSE DUTCH VERGE with MOCK PENDULUM

A fine 18th Century Dutch calendar verge with mock pendulum and champleve dial in silver repousse pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with unusual pillars with peirced and engraved silver affixes in the form of fish secured by a polished steel plate. Chased and engraved silver cock with a glazed semi-circular aperture revealing the gilt mock pendulum bob. On the table a scene with a figure beside a sailing vessel which is repeated on the centre of the dial. Pierced and engraved decorative plate, a square to adjust the regulator, its index visible through the glazed mock pendulum aperture. Fusee and chain with ratchet barrel setup between the plates. Silver champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, arcaded minute ring, decorative copper pins seperating the numerals. At the centre the scene repeated from the cock, a small aperture below the centre for the date indication, pierced gilt hands. Plain silver inner case, silver pendant and bow. The "repousse" type outer of cast silver depicting a classical scene of two figures with four hunting dogs and a cupid within a rococo border.

An interesting watch with a number of desirable features. It is very unusual to find a scene repeated on the cock and dial. The outer case requires more packing papers than normal but would appear to be original. The scene is probably of Diana the Roman mythological goddess of the moon and of the hunt.
