| Index No. A4401 | LATE 17th CENTURY GILT & SHAGREEN VERGE |
A late 17th Century English verge with gilt champleve dial in a shagreen covered gilt metal case. Deep full plate fire gilt movement, the Egyptian pillars with pierced galleries above. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain steel balance, Signed gilt champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Gilt metal consular case recently recovered in green shagreen, gilt pique pins and circular cover to the winding aperture. The movement is released from the case by inserting a pin through the inner bezel.
George Etherington, an eminent maker of the period. Free of the clockmakers Company 1684, Master in 1709. Died 1729. The movement is of normal size for the period but the design of the dial plate and consular case make the watch seem deceptively small.
