Index No. N209 Staffordshire Enamel Toy Watch
A rare late 18th century Staffordshire enamel box in the form of a watch. The front and back of the case of white enamel decorated with a polychrome enamel floral spray. The dial of the watch formed with the front of the case, the applied gilt bezel and retaining a bull's eye glass. The dial of typical mid 18th Century design with Roman and Arabic numerals, steel beetle and poker hands which can be turned with a small butterfly piece from inside the case. Gilt pendant and ring bow.
Anonymous English
ConditionCirca 1760
Excellent.
Diameter 51 mm
In remarkably fine condition this rare piece is even more unusual as it has watch hands covered by a glass. Most of these boxes have the dial exposed with the hands either fixed or painted on. Although these hands can be moved they are fixed at the same angle to each other. Often regarded purely as toys these pieces may have been used as patch boxes. See "The Artistry of the English Watch" by Cedric Jagger colour plate 14 for a watch with a similar case.
