| An unusual piece apparently altered circa 1820 by Earnshaw. The balance, balance cock and barrel bridge have been replaced. The main plate bears the original Arnold number and the word "Son". The barrel bridge has been replaced and engraved, presumably for Earnshaw, with both makers names. The reason for the double signature may be related to the argument between the makers about the invention of the spring detent escapement. The balance cock has an index for a regulator which could not have been fitted at the same time as the stud for the hairspring. See Antiquarian Horology, December 1966 and John Arnold & Son by Vaudrey Mercer page 96. |
