Index No. M4808 Unusual Arnold Chronometer Movement
A pocket chronometer movement by John Arnold with alterations by Thomas Earnshaw. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone, compensation balance with freesprung blue steel helical hairspring. Arnold type spring detent chronometer escapement.
SignedJohn Arnold & Son - Thos Earnshaw per Fecit - 345/644 - Invt et Fect
ConditionCirca 1788
Excellent, requires cleaning. Lacking click and spring for maintaining power, dial and motion work.
Diameter 43 mm
An unusual piece apparently altered circa 1820 by Earnshaw. The balance, balance cock and barrel bridge have been replaced. The main plate bears the original Arnold number and the word "Son". The barrel bridge has been replaced and engraved, presumably for Earnshaw, with both makers names. The reason for the double signature may be related to the argument between the makers about the invention of the spring detent escapement. The balance cock has an index for a regulator which could not have been fitted at the same time as the stud for the hairspring. See Antiquarian Horology, December 1966 and John Arnold & Son by Vaudrey Mercer page 96.
