Index No. M4706 UNUSUAL LATE 18th CENTURY ENGLISH CYLINDER MOVEMENT

An unusual late 18th Century long duration English cylinder with going barrel. Full plate fire gilt movement with round pillars. Unusual going barrel, the teeth set below it, the teeth the same diameter as the barrel. Extra wheel in the train to allow the watch to run for a longer period. Pierced and engraved cock with diamond endstone, pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Small plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, large brass escape wheel. Later dial plate and off white enamel dial with Roman numerals.

An unusual piece. It was not common for English watches of the period to forego the use of a fusee and chain. This maker, who had the movement engraved "Inventor" may have done so purely to allow the watch to run for a longer period (probably eight days). It also has the advantage in allowing the watch to be wound in the normal direction.
