Index No. A4754 ENGLISH CHRONOMETER in GIMBALED BOX

An early 19th Century English pocket chronometer in a gimbaled deck box. Full plate keywind fusee movement with Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone, heavy compensation balance with freesprung helical blue steel hairspring. Earnshaw chronometer escapement well converted to pivoted detent, escape pivots with endstones. Numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gold hands. Purpose made oak deck box lined with velvet. Small brass bowl with clip on bezel, brass gimbals, locking lever and key.

An interesting piece. The conversion to a pivoted detent has been carried out to a very high standard but has necessitated re-gilding the plates. The return spring is a helical balance spring and fine adjustment for depthing is provided by a screw. The box is also of very good quality, probably made specially for use on board a small ship. Robert Pennington, 1780 - 1824 An emminent chronometer maker who was employed with others at the end of the 18th Century by Thomas Mudge junior to produce marine chronometers to his fathers (complicated) design. He introduced the use of screws in replacement of weights on the balance.
