The now famous watch brand, was credited with breathing new life into the then ailing Swiss watch industry following the launch of the company 32 years ago, in 1983. Swatch swiftly became a cultural phenomenon, part of a trend if you will, with its multi-coloured plastic designs and affordable price tags for the majority of its collection.

The vast collection of more than 5,800Swatch watches, which featured limited editions by artists including Kiki Picasso and Keith Haring, as well as a James Bond 40th anniversary collection, was sold as a “superlot” at Sotheby’s yesterday (Tuesday 7 April).

The collection that was made available to the public was the pride and joy of Luxembourg-based Paul Dunkel, 68, who has set aside more than twenty years to track down almost all the watches Swatch created in its first 25 years.
